Officials in Mamaroneck held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday morning in celebration of the Waverly Avenue Bridge reopening.

Late last year, the bridge, which connects Waverly Avenue and Fenimore Road, was closed to allow for major upgrades.

Both the Town and Village of Mamaroneck worked together with Westchester County and New York State, to complete the $5 million project.

"The bridge was in disrepair, and it wasn't really deemed to be safe anymore, so it was really critical that we rebuilt the bridge," said Mamaroneck Town Supervisor Jane Elkind Eney.

The bridges' upgrades are extensive.

The previous bridge was a point of constriction for the Sheldrake River, causing extensive flooding.

This was a problem residents told News 12 about last December.

"We've widened it from 25 to 34 feet, we also deepened all the footings and the foundations to provide for a deepened channel to hopefully mitigate flooding in the future," said Town of Mamaroneck engineer Robert Wasp.

Other priorities were safer pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

After a couple of brief speeches, the ribbon was officially cut, allowing traffic to flow freely for the first time in a year.
