A water pipe leak in Nyack created a nightmare commute this morning for drivers trying to cross the Tappan Zee Bridge in Westchester County.
State police say a two-inch PVC pipe under the Broadway overpass in South Nyack froze and then broke, causing a water leak onto the I-87 roadway below. The water on the roadway froze and caused multiple car accidents.
All lanes were closed temporarily due to the accidents and to salt the roadway. The lanes were reopened at 8 a.m., but residual traffic delays went as far back as Spring Valley.
Nyack officials say the water line was for the new bridge construction project, and it is Tappan Zee Constructors' responsibility to repair the line. Water service to Nyack residents has not been affected.
