Warning period ends, work zone fines kick in at select NYC tunnels and bridges

The warning period for drivers who speed in work zones on select MTA bridges and tunnels is nearly over.
The MTA will start ticketing drivers who go more than 10 mph over the posted limit inside construction zones on Tuesday. Officials say signs will be posted ahead of active construction sites to alert drivers.
According to the MTA, over 15,000 warning notices have been issued since the automated work zone safety enforcement program took effect on bridges and tunnels on June 30.
Officials say that during the warning period, some drivers were caught going as fast as 111 mph in a 45 mph work zone.
Driver's should pay attention to their speed or expect a fine at the following bridges and tunnels:
Bronx-Whitestone Bridge
Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge
Henry Hudson Bridge
Hugh L. Carey Tunnel
Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge
Queens Midtown Tunnel
Robert F. Kennedy Bridge
Throgs Neck Bridge
Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
Gov. Kathy Hochul first signed the program into law for State Highways in 2021. State legislature expanded it to include bridges and tunnels in 2025.
