A Wappinger man will spend 30 years in prison for shooting at two officers in broad daylight in November 2019.
The officers had been responding to a civil dispute over a vehicle trailer.
When they attempted to speak with Keith Potik, he pulled out a .45 caliber gun and fired eight times at them.
No one was injured.
Red Hook Police Sgt. Patrick Hildenbrand says he's thankful he did not have to plan for two funerals for his officers that day.
"I'm thankful my officers got to go home and see their families, see their kids," says Sgt. Hildenbrand.
While there were no physical injuries, the female officer is said to be suffering from emotional scars that have ended her law enforcement career just as it started.
Hildenbrand telling News 12 that she has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Albany University, and that she "had goals of going federal - and those were cut short.”
Judge Edward McLoughlin called the incident “incredibly reckless, for a common interaction that didn’t need to escalate.”
Potik’s lawyer said Potik is remorseful for his actions.
In June, Potik pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder and two gun charges.
