Republican state Senator Nick Spano asked election officials Wednesday to delay police checks of voters' residences in the 35th state Senate District until after Election Day. The issue came up last week after Republican lawyers challenged the registrations of nearly 6,000 voters in the district. The process can include sending officers to voters' listed addresses to see if the person living there is the person registered.Attorneys for Spano's challenger, Democrat Andrea Stewart-Cousins, pointed out that most of the targeted voters are minorities who might not vote if an officer checks up on them. Spano agreed, which is why he says he asked for the delay. However, Stewart-Cousins says Spano only changed his mind after negative backlash. Elections Commissioner Reginald Lafayette said no matter what the candidates say, its unlikely the police could have gone door to door before Election Day. Related Information
