Rep. Jamaal Bowman conceded the Democratic primary in NY-16 Tuesday night to Westchester County Executive George Latimer.
Bowman won the seat in 2020, defeating Rep. Eliot Engel and easily won his 2022 primary in a four-person race. The lifelong educator and Bronx middle school principal has made a name for himself as a member of "The Squad" – a progressive group of Democratic lawmakers.
The Bowman loss disrupted what has generally been a stable primary season for congressional incumbents.
“This movement has always been about justice. It has always been about humanity. It has always been about equality,” Bowman said at his election party in Yonkers.
As of now, former Scarsdale mayor and pediatrician Dr. Miriam Flisser, who lost to Bowman in the 2022 general election, is the Republican nominee again in November.
Bowman's name will appear along the Working Families Party line on the November ballot. It remains unclear if he will still campaign or throw his support behind Latimer.
