Vote 2024: Primary day features heavyweight battle between Bowman and Latimer

New York voters head to the polls today for primary elections that have seen robust early voting, suggesting a highly engaged electorate.
The primaries will determine the candidates who will appear on the November ballot for a variety of races, including U.S. Senate, state Senate, state Assembly and the Democratic primary for Westchester County District Attorney. In that contest, longtime county court Judge Susan Cacace faces off against civil rights lawyer William Wagstaff.
However, the race attracting national attention in the area is for the 16th Congressional District. Two-term incumbent Congressman Jamaal Bowman is facing a challenge from two-term Westchester County Executive George Latimer for the Democratic nomination.
Both candidates held separate events in Mount Vernon on Monday in a final push before Election Day. Bowman was joined by fellow "Squad" members Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley for a rally at Hartley Park. Around the block, Latimer rallied with Westchester and Bronx clergy at the Mount Vernon City Democratic Committee headquarters.
"We are building a new nation that works for every single person in our country," Bowman said.
"It's important to show that the coalition that we put together in my campaign is widespread," Latimer said.
According to the Westchester County Board of Elections, 21,000 people cast early ballots going into today's primary election. That's more than double what it was four years ago.
Polls will close at 9 p.m.
