Pope Francis will be making his long-awaited trip to New York next month, and a group of women from Yonkers are putting the finishing touches on some important linens.
Felisa Gonzalez is part of a volunteer sewing group embroidering tablecloths for Catholic Charities, the organization housing Pope Francis in East Harlem during his New York City visit.
There are 18 volunteers working three-hour shifts, three days a week, in the basement of St. Peter's School in Yonkers.
Aside from nine tablecloths, the women also helped design altar linens which will be used at the pope's Mass in Madison Square Garden.
Esmeralda Hoscoy, the regional supervisor for Catholic Charities, says many of the women, who are wives of day laborers, have bonded over the spiritual sewing.
