A “Justice for Damar” rally was held Saturday in Peekskill’s Riverfront Green Park as support grows for a 42-year-old man at the center of a violent arrest.
The Dec. 3 video shows Damar Fields, 42, being beaten, kicked and Tased by police while on the ground.
"A Black man was stomped out in broad daylight in Westchester County," declared rally organizer Darrell Davis.
The rally was held where Fields was arrested. Earlier this week, the Peekskill Police Benevolent Association, the union for the department's officers, said through its attorney that the officer was called to the gazebo to find Fields with his pants down and that he refused to follow the officer's commands.
Friends say Field’s is still suffering the after affects.
"He's not doing well. He started off with emotional challenges. He was Tased several times, so he probably has some trauma and PTSD,” said community activist Darrell Davis. “When I talk to him, he mumbles sometimes, so I know he's struggling."
Longtime Peekskill resident Sandy Allen said she also has concerns for the safety of her own family.
"I have two grandsons. This has to stop. I'm scared this could happen to them. What they're doing is not right. That's why I'm here to support," she said.
In a recent statement, Peekskill Police Chief Adam Renwick promised his commitment to a complete and thorough review of all evidence in the case. The Westchester County District Attorney's Office is also investigating.
