Vietnam War veterans were recognized for their service Saturday during a ceremony and street renaming in Yonkers.
The veterans were joined by elected officials as a portion of Yonkers Avenue was renamed Vietnam Veterans Way.
Veteran Frank Sullo says the recognition was bittersweet for him, having returned from duty in Vietnam in 1974. "It's a very wonderful moment, yet it's a sad moment," he said.
Another veteran, Sam Riti, says the event should have honored all veterans, including those who served during WWI, WWII and the Korean War. There are also better locations for the two-mile stretch of renamed street, according to him, such as near the Veterans Memorial Plaza or on South Broadway.
This year marks 50 years since the United States escalated its participation in the Vietnam War.
