Family and friends gathered in Chappaqua Thursday to pay their final respects to one of two victims of a deadly car accident that happened over the weekend in Yorktown.
The service for 23-year-old Jerry Nardone, of Midwood, was held at the Saints John and Mary Church. Nardone and 21-year-old Joe Bon-Gorio, of Yorktown Heights, died in a fiery crash in Yorktown early Sunday morning.
Police say Nardone, who was behind the wheel and speeding, tried to pass another car on Underhill Avenue when he lost control of his vehicle, which crashed and burst into flames.
"Jerry was a terrific kid, he was a fun kid," says family friend Trish Giordano. "He was the type of kid that people wanted to be around."
According to relatives, Nardone was battling cancer when he died in the accident, but friends say the disease never got him down.
"If you live your life like that, that's how you're going to be remembered, and Jerry will be remembered as a great human being," says high school baseball coach Joe Kearns.
Nardone was laid to rest at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla. A funeral Mass for Bon-Gorio will be held at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Shrub Oak Friday.
