Poughkeepsie town police say former congressional candidate Kyle Van De Water has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police say they found his body at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery on Tuesday.

Van De Water was 41.

He ran for Congress as a Republican last year and lost to Democrat Antonio Delgado.

His death comes less than two weeks after he abruptly pulled out of a second run to challenge Delgado.

Van De Water also served in Afghanistan during his eight years in the Army.

Some organizations are referring to resources to help reduce the veteran suicide rate, including Vet2Vet in Dutchess County.

"I want people to know that they're not struggling alone—it's a lot more common than people think… I would definitely like to know more about his story and what he went through…he is not one of the veterans who reached out to us," says Anthony Kavouras, of Vet2Vet Dutchess County.

In a statement, Rep. Delgado said, "We shared a number of conversations about family and country, and I walked away from each one knowing that he had a profound love for both."

Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro also released a statement saying, "Kyle was a war hero who put his life and well-being on the line for his country."
