Residents of a trailer park in Verplanck are being forced out after the town of Cortlandt revealed it wants to transform the park into a recreation area.
The Riveredge Mobile Home Park is located along Riverview Avenue. Only 17 homes remain after vacated premises were torn down Monday.
Town leaders say the residents have been living there rent-free for 10 years as part of a lease agreement signed by the former owner who died.
The land belongs to the town, and that lease is now up. Cortlandt has plans to turn the land into a waterfront park with an outdoor theater and restaurant.
The town has allotted some funds to help residents relocate. They must be off the property by July 10.
