New York City is closing a vacant jail on Rikers Island permanently.
The North Infirmary Command first opened back in 1932. The Department of Corrections is transferring jurisdiction to the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, which also oversees other large portions of the George Motchan Detention Center (GMDC) and Anna M. Kross Center (AMKC).
The closure is part of an effort to replace the jails on Rikers Island with a more modern and borough-based jail system.
