Ulster County's legislative body has unanimously approved a proposal that could lead to the recognition of domestic partnerships on an official registry.

This measure would enable the county to issue certifications acknowledging the partnerships of individuals who register with the county clerk.

County officials assert that the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the significance of granting non-married, yet committed partners, the legal authority to access privileges such as hospital visitation rights and joint lease signing under state law.

A public hearing will be conducted within the next 30 days before the proposal is enacted as law. Information regarding domestic partnership registration is available on the county's website.
