Two senators, Republican Susan Serino and Democrat Michelle Hinchey, find themselves in the unique position of running against a fellow sitting senator after redistricting placed them in the same district.

The pair have even worked together during their overlapping time in the state Senate, co-sponsoring a bill that directed New York's commissioner of agriculture and markets to create a public awareness campaign about Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses – that Gov. Kathy Hochul signed into law last year.
Abortion rights are a hot-button issue in this race.
In the aftermath of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Hinchey sponsored legislation to protect health care workers and abortion rights in the state.
Serino later voted against the bill once it was brought to the state Senate floor.
