Truck carrying 30,000 pounds of military explosives catches fire on Newburgh-Beacon Bridge

A tractor-trailer carrying military explosive material caught fire on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge early Tuesday, but firefighters quickly extinguished the flames before they could spread to the cargo.
The fire was reported just before 4 a.m. on Interstate 84 eastbound near Exit 41, according to the Beacon Fire Department.
Fire officials said the tractor-trailer was transporting about 30,000 pounds of Department of Defense explosive munitions to Connecticut.
Firefighters arrived within about five minutes and found a fire involving the trailer's rear brake and axle area.
Crews quickly extinguished the fire and confirmed it had not extended into the cargo compartment.
The explosive material was not damaged, fire officials said.
The driver was not injured.
Officials said the incident was unusual because of the cargo, but the fire itself remained minor and confined to the rear brake and axle area.
