A trio of childhood friends are aiming to become the first to open a legal cannabis store in Peekskill.

Daniel Berte, Stephen Bond and Shane Jackson, who met in elementary and middle school, say they have a deep understanding of the community they grew up in.

"We know the demographic and we think it would be such a good fit. There is such a vibrant artistic community," said Bond.

Unfortunately, they've run into a few roadblocks. Their business, Valley Greens, was licensed by the state in June, but a temporary injunction has halted the business and hundreds of others from opening.

The delay coupled with some community backlash led the landlord of a potential business location to explore other tenants for the vacant building located at 638 Central Ave.

"They found themselves in a situation where they were losing money essentially, so they had to explore their routes of having a different tenant in there," said Jackson.

Since then, the trio had other landlords come forward offering potential locations for the business.
