Parents and students at Transfiguration School in Tarrytown say they are in shock because their school is closing.
Now they are scrambling to find another school to go to in the fall.
In a letter, the archdiocese cited a number of factors, including a 50% decrease in enrollment over the last 10 years and the significant increases in the school’s operating deficit.
This is leaving parents wondering why there wasn't more notice if it has been an issue for so long.
"We had asked as parents to the administration and they went back to the archdiocese to ask where we in danger of closing, so we kept asking and we were told every time that we were ok and our doors wouldn't be closing at this time," said parent Olga Mendez.
They feel the archdiocese kept it secret until the last possible moment and they don't understand why.
"We feel they already knew this was coming along the line and they didn't share that information its heartbreaking and its sad," Mendez added.
Lisa Lanzalotto spent $700 on her 10-year-old daughter's uniform for next year. Now she cant get that money back.
"I've lost my faith a little bit to go to Catholic schools...If they can do this to one school, what's to say they cant do it to another school," Lanzalotto said.
The school did send out a list of other Catholic schools for parents to look into.
"Of the list, so many of the schools for the younger kids are full, they don't have space, and some of the schools said they cant make space, so what do we do?" asked Mendez.
"Unfortunately, I'm going to be looking at public schools, which I really didn't want to do," said Lanzallotto.
