The Town of Mamaroneck Police Department is warning people about a rise in residential burglaries.
The town has seen over half of the residential burglaries they usually get in the entire year over just the first two months of 2023. Most of the incidents happened in the evening.
Lt. James Maher says while investigators are not sure why it's happening, it has emerged as a county and even regional trend.
The police are working to combat these incidents and have stepped up patrols within the town, but they are asking for the public's help as well.
"Be vigilant, if you see something, say something. Take a look at your house. Think like a burglar, take a 360-degree view of your house. Look around and say, 'How would I break into my house?' If you can address those vulnerabilities, do it," says Maher.
To help protect yourself from becoming a victim, Maher suggests leaving on interior lights when possible and using exterior motion lights, not allowing mail or packages to accumulate and setting the alarm system -  even if you're only leaving the house briefly.
