Attention drivers in Orange and Ulster counties! Be prepared for a significant closure on the Thruway next week.
Starting Jan. 6, the closure will affect the northbound lanes from Exit 17 in Newburgh to Exit 18 in New Paltz. The Thruway Authority has announced a complete shutdown of the northbound lanes, commencing at 7 p.m. and continuing for a minimum of 12 hours. All traffic will be diverted at Exit 17.
This closure aims to remove a section of the Brookside Road overpass, which has been out of commission since May due to damage from nine over-height vehicles.
During this closure, southbound lanes will remain open. However, the following weekend will see closures in the southbound lanes to complete the removal of the overpass.
The Thruway Authority strongly advises drivers to consider alternate routes or postpone travel plans during these weekends.
