A repeated freeze-thaw cycle is creating potholes across New York City, prompting crews to fan out and repair thousands in a single day.

In Soundview, workers began filling holes along Lafayette Avenue, where drivers say road conditions have worsened. One resident said some potholes are deep enough to reach an ankle, while others warned hitting one could lead to costly vehicle damage.

The Department of Transportation says dozens of crews are working citywide to address the issue. Last Saturday alone, crews repaired more than 8,000 potholes — roughly a week’s worth of work completed in a single day — with plans to fix even more.

Drivers are urged to use caution around work zones, slow down and move over to allow crews to complete repairs safely and efficiently.
