A Peekskill family told News 12 they think the police are protecting the suspect in the fatal hit-and-run that killed their son.

Richard Lent, 34, was killed on July 15 when his motorcycle was hit by a car on Route 9 near Senasqua Road in Croton. Nicholas Edwards-Ambos allegedly fled the scene before being arrested three days later. But Richards’ family didn't find out about the arrest until they saw it on the news.

“We need another charge to be implemented, because leaving the scene doesn't warrant this man to do the time this man should do for actually killing someone in an accident,” said Randolph Thompson, Richard’s father.

Thompson said he and his wife have tried to learn more information about the investigation but were repeatedly told that police couldn’t give out any information. They also said they weren’t given Edward-Ambos’ name until this past Friday, six weeks after the accident.

"They’re covering up because he's a Croton fireman,” added Thompson. “He has ties to the community, a volunteer to the community for over seven years and they're protecting him."

Ambos was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and released on $5,000 bail. He is currently on administrative leave from the fire department.

The Croton Police Department told News 12 that it does not comment on open investigations.
