Two teenagers were taken into custody early Thursday morning after leading police on a chase in a stolen vehicle before fleeing on foot into a wooded area.

The incident began around 1:00 a.m. when a Washington Township police officer spotted a silver Hyundai speeding into town along State Highway 42 southbound.

Noticing that the occupants inside were wearing face masks, police attempted to pull the vehicle over after it turned abruptly into the Raising Cane’s parking lot.

As the officer initiated the traffic stop, two suspects jumped out of the moving Hyundai and ran on foot into the woods toward Egizi Funeral Home.

Police acted quickly to safely bring the unmanned, rolling vehicle to a stop.

The two suspects fled through the wooded tree line before encountering two police officers on Ganttown Road, where both suspects surrendered without further incident.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the Hyundai had been reported stolen overnight out of Glassboro. Officers discovered that the driver’s-side door handle had been removed and the ignition was popped open. Inside the vehicle, police recovered a long flathead screwdriver commonly used in car thefts.

Authorities charged a 14-year-old from Clayton and a 17-year-old from Glassboro with receiving stolen property and resisting arrest by flight. In accordance with New Jersey juvenile justice guidelines, both teens were processed and released to their legal guardians pending future court dates.
