Teen hailed as hero for helping distressed man in Croton River
A teen is being hailed as a hero for her role in rescuing a man from the Croton River Wednesday evening.
First responders say they rescued the man after he went into the river to save his dog.
Croton Middle School student Sydney McCabe says she was in the car with her father when she saw the man struggling to swim over to a tree branch in the river.
She told her dad to turn around, and when they got to the location, her father told the man to hang on while Sydney called 911.
"If I hadn't saw him, he'd probably have hypothermia and probably wouldn't make it overnight," says Sydney.
The Croton Fire Department, a water rescue team from Yorktown and EMS from Ossining were on the scene in minutes to help get the man out of the river.
The rescued man was treated at the hospital for cold water exposure and released.
The man's dog was not found.
