Two teenage boys have been arrested for allegedly raping two young girls inside their Claremont school.
According to police, the 13- and 14-year-old boys brought the victims, ages 12 and 13, to their school auditorium and raped them. They say the victims knew their attackers.
Authorities say it happened during school hours at J.H.S. 145 on Teller Avenue on Oct. 16.
The 14-year-old boy was charged with third-degree rape and criminal sex act, while the 13-year-old boy was charged with first-degree rape and criminal sex act. They are not being charged as adults.
Parents say they are very shocked and disturbed by the news. Marco Velez, whose 12-year-old daughter attends the school, says he is outraged that the school never notified parents about it. Velez says he learned about the incident from watching the news.
Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina released a statement saying in part, "I am deeply disturbed and saddened by these reported events...As a mother and grandmother, I treat every student as my own and every school must be a safe haven."
Farina says the NYPD is investigating the matter and that additional guidance counselors will be on hand at the school.
