The Tappan Zee Bridge celebrated its 60th birthday Tuesday.

The toll was just 50 cents when the bridge opened on Dec. 15, 1955. Today it has risen to $5.

In the 1950s, the bridge carried about 80,000 cars per day. Today that number is near 140,000. The bridge has deteriorated under all that wear and tear, and is now being replaced by a new $4 billion bridge being built right beside it.

The new bridge, which is expected to open in 2017, is being designed to last much longer than the Tappan Zee Bridge.
