A fiery crash on the Tappan Zee Bridge involving a tractor-trailer and two cars left one dead Sunday.
Police confirmed the driver who was behind the wheel of the tractor-trailer at the center of the accident died. His vehicle was struck by a small Toyota SUV, which caused the truck to roll over the divider. It caught fire after it was overturned in the middle of the bridge. Police also say a third car was involved.
Occupants of both passenger vehicles reportedly suffered only minor injuries.
The collision, which occurred around 7:20 p.m., started a fire that had crews rushing to the scene. Emergency responders blocked traffic on the bridge, as well as the water. The accident tied up traffic for hours. Authorities temporarily shut down the bridge in both directions.
Drivers were forced to turn around and find alternate routes on secondary highways to make their way home.
The identity of the driver has not been revealed.
