A swastika was found on the campus of Rye Country Day School.
School head Randall Dunn notified parents on Tuesday that the swastika was created using water on a campus walkway.
While the marking is no longer visible, the school says they are taking the offense very seriously and are taking appropriate disciplinary action.
Cantor Melanie Cooperman, with the Community Synagogue of Rye, says the incident opens the community up to a larger conversation, especially during Hanukkah.
"Hanukkah is a holiday all about resilience and moral courage, and it reminds us that even as antisemitism persists, so does our responsibility as educators, as parents, as community leaders, to teach why these symbols can cause harm, and how we choose light over darkness," said Cooperman.
The incident comes at a painful time for the Jewish community.
This past Sunday, two gunmen opened fire during a Hanukkah event in Sydney, Australia, leaving 15 dead.
"After the recent violent antisemitic attack in Sydney, even smaller local incidents carry extra emotional weight for Jews in the Jewish community," said Cooperman.
According to the Anti-Defamation League, more than half of Jewish Americans reported experiencing some form of antisemitism in the past year.
Rye Country Day School officials say they are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
