All four men suspected in the murder of baseball prospect Mike Nolan faced a judge in Westchester County Court today.
Nashaun Hunter, 17, of the Bronx, pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. When Hunter appeared in the courtroom, Nolan's mother Donna started sobbing. When his lawyer entered a plea of not guilty to second-degree murder, the judge had to quiet the Nolan side of the gallery because of the scoffing laughter at the plea.
Darren Dawson, 18, and Tejmitra Singh, 23, both of the Bronx, and Garth O'Neil Cole, a 22-year-old from Mount Vernon, pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault and weapons charges.
Police say the four drove by the parking lot of a Burger King on Central Avenue in September and opened fire. Nolan was shot three times, once in the head. He died after being in a medically induced coma for several weeks.
Investigators believe an argument about a drag race days before the murder sparked the violence. They say that Nolan may not have even been a part of that incident or the intended target.
Nolan, 23, was a graduate of Yonkers Saunders Trade and Technical High School and had been drafted by the Oakland A's.
Nolan's father Jimmy placed his Oakland A's jersey and cap beside him during the arraignment. Nolan's parents vow they will not miss a day in court for their son.
The murder charge includes a possible sentence of 25 years to life in prison. The assault charges have a maximum sentence of 25 years, and the weapons charges carry 15-year sentences.
The four suspects are due back in court on June 1.
