Survivors of a fatal fire in Spring Valley are taking the landlord to court over claims of negligence and dangerous conditions in the building.
A fire last month at 118 South Lake St. killed five people, including two kids. Authorities determined the fire was sparked by electrical problems.
Three people who were in the home at the time of the fire are filing a lawsuit against the landlord, Jacob Jeremias.
Eusebio Interiano Vasquez, Jendri Geovanny Climaco Interiano and Marisol Diaz Diaz are being represented by the same law firm for lawsuits recently filed in state Supreme Court in Rockland County.
The three suits allege negligence by Jeremias and his employees for allowing dangerous and defective conditions in the home.
The Interiano Vasquez and Diaz Diaz suits both state they sustained severe permanent injuries, including severe burns and scarring.
The Climaco Interiano suit states he sustained severe permanent injuries, including smoke inhalation, lung damage, scarring and burns.
Many people in the Lake Street home were related to each other, meaning they not only lost their home, but also family members.
These lawsuits come as the community prepares to say goodbye during services on Thursday to those who died more than a month ago.
News 12 has not heard back from Jacob Jeremias nor the attorney named in the document representing the three surviving victims.
A funeral for four of the victims is set for Thursday at St. Joseph Church in Spring Valley.
