Supporters of creating a state-appointed monitor for the East Ramapo School District are divided over changes needed to get the law passed.

The state Senate is considering a new plan that would require financial oversight of the embattled school board by the state comptroller, but strip away the monitor's veto power.

The bill's author, Sen. David Carlucci, says it's a compromise that will win over skeptical Republicans.

Some members of Rockland's religious community are skeptical of the last-minute changes to the bill, while others say it is better than nothing.

Carlucci's fellow Rockland Democrats, including Assembly members Ken Zebrowski and Ellen Jaffee, released a press release Tuesday saying they do not support his changes because they don't think it does enough to help the district.
