The Sullivan West Central School District community is mourning the sudden loss of one of their elementary students who died in an accident.
The district said in a letter shared Monday that Delana Weyandt died late Sunday night.
“This tragic loss has deeply affected our school community, and our thoughts are with the Weyandt family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” says Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Instructional Services Daniel Parisi.
A GoFundMe for the girl’s family says she was hit by a car while holding her sister’s hand and crossing the street.
“My sister and I were walking, and we went to cross the road safely. We looked both ways and held each other’s hands,” wrote the GoFundMe organizer, Sophia Weyandt. “A driver came speeding and before I could move her, it was too late. He hit her. She sadly passed away in my arms.”
News 12 is told the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the girl’s death. News 12 reached out to them for information but hasn’t heard back.
The Sullivan West Central School District had grief counselors on hand throughout the day Tuesday at the high school for those affected by the tragedy.
“Let’s come together as a community to support one another through this difficult time,” says Parisi.
