The heartbroken mother of an 11-year-old Sullivan County girl who was killed this week while crossing State Route 52 in Narrowsburg is speaking exclusively with News 12 about their devastating loss.
“Everything around here reminds us of her. We are just broke,” says Shelby Weyandt. “How do I start my life over without her?”
Delana Weyandt, a sixth-grade student at Sullivan West Elementary School, was fatally struck by a vehicle Sunday while holding her 15-year-old sister’s hand, according to the family.
Delana Weyandt with her father.
Weyandt says the girls were with her at their grandparents’ house for a baby shower and were walking to visit a neighbor’s dog before they returned home to Cochecton when the accident happened just before 9 p.m.
“I have not slept since it happened. I’m waking up in the middle of the night, crying, going into her room, holding her stuff,” says Weyandt. “She was just everything. She was such a bright light.”
The child’s mother says her daughter is believed to have died on impact and that the driver remained on scene.
“My 15-year-old was holding her head, crying, telling her to come back, we need her,” Weyandt says.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. Undersheriff Eric Chaboty tells News 12 that the children were walking with traffic and that their investigation determined Delana was turning toward the vehicle as she was struck.
“This guy was speeding,” Weyandt says. “There are lights right there. How did he not see her? My daughter’s shorts were completely ripped off. Her leg was bent back. Her head had a gash in it.”
Authorities say the incident remains under investigation and that the driver's speed will be determined by a state police accident reconstruction report. The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office says the driver was not impaired at the time of the crash and passed a field sobriety test. The driver has not been publicly identified by officials, and no charges have been filed.
Wake services for Delana will be held Wednesday and Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Harris Funeral Home in Roscoe. Funeral services will be held there on Friday at 10 a.m.
Weyandt says her daughter will be remembered as a beautiful, outgoing and funny little girl who loved animals, her family and friends.
“We just bought her a bow to go back to archery and she’ll never use it. She wanted to do gymnastics again. She’ll never do that,” says Weyandt. “There’s just so many things that she’ll never do again. She was just a great kid.”
