The mother of two Sullivan County children seriously hurt in a propane gas explosion last month tells News 12 both are now doing much better.
Autumn Turner says Jessie and Savannah Mackerley, ages 5 and 9, are awake, healing and in stable condition at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital.
She says both will still need weeks of medical care, follow-up surgeries and physical therapy.
Turner says she’s relied on the support and kindness of hospital staff, first responders and the community since the explosion in Kiamesha Lake on Sept. 30.
“Thank you so much for all the thoughts and prayers. We still have such a long road ahead, but we are talking about ‘next steps’ and that is a miracle in itself,” says Turner.
A GoFundMe for the children has raised almost $5,500.
Turner’s boyfriend, Robert McDowell, was also seriously injured in the fire and is recovering.
Turner says the family lost all of its belongings in the explosion and is now looking for a new home that’s wheelchair-accessible.
