Hastings High School has teamed up with a Bronx high school to put on a production of “Hairspray” next month.
The high school says it originally didn't have enough funds to put on the production until they won a $10,000 grant from NBC.
This is the first production in the district to include students from outside the district, according to school officials.
The production coordinator of the musical says due to "Hairspray" being about the importance of integration and diversity, he hoped to partner with other schools for a diverse cast. He also says that some parents were reluctant to support the project that would include minority students from outside the district. The production then won a grant from NBC.
The Hastings High School students will be joined by Kipp Charter School students, along with students from two schools in Yonkers.
Students who are in the play but not from the district have to provide their own transportation. One student from Yonkers says they take public transportation.
