Family: DJ Henry settlement vindicates, but doesn’t ease pain
The mother of a Pace University football player who was fatally shot by a police officer says a $6 million settlement makes her feel vindicated, but not victorious.

"This is the only recourse we had left ... it doesn't make us happy in any way," says Angela Henry, mother of DJ Henry. "We have asked from the beginning for truth and honesty, and we've asked for an apology, and we haven't received that."

DJ Henry was killed in October 2010 outside a Thornwood bar. As he started to drive away from the establishment, Pleasantville Officer Aaron Hess fired shots through the windshield because he believed his own life was in danger when Henry didn't stop. Hess was never indicted on criminal charges.

The civil settlement reached Monday requires Hess and the village of Pleasantville to pay $6 million. Henry's family plans to put the money toward the DJ Dream Foundation, a not-for-profit they created to provide scholarships in his honor.

"The settlement resolves this case against Pleasantville and all village defendants," Pleasantville Village Mayor Peter Scherer said. "We appreciate the efforts of everyone involved to bring closure to this tragic story."

Calls for comment to the attorney representing Hess were not returned.
