STORM WATCH: Heavy rain, wind, and even some snow possible overnight across Brooklyn

For the first time in several months, a coastal storm is developing and bringing heavy rain overnight. If the rain is heavy enough, some snow could even mix in.

Wet and slick road conditions continue this evening as rain showers have been on-and-off through most of the afternoon. The rain picks up in intensity around midnight. The storm's energy begins to consolidate into a stronger coastal storm offshore after midnight, with several bands of moderate to heavy rain likely between midnight and 5 a.m.
Since this is a coastal storm, and there is cold air available with the current pattern, there is a chance for wet snow to mix in for some between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Saturday. In a process known as "dynamic cooling," the heavy snow from higher up drags colder air down with it. The heavier the precipitation, the longer the snow can stay frozen and not melt, eventually repeating the process until the heavy snow stays as snow all the way down to the ground. The ground itself will be way too warm to support snow sticking but it is likely to fall across northernmost parts of the borough between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m.
If you are not waking up until after 7 a.m., there will not be any snow leftover. It will be a misty and drizzly day all day Saturday with high wind. Gusts will be between 30 and 40 mph, making it feel like the lower freezing. Travel conditions and outdoor activities will be impacted for the first half of the weekend. Improvements with warmer weather and some peeks of sun are likely on Sunday and highs near 55. Much more sun and warmer conditions will move in on Monday with high temperatures in the mid-60s Monday and Tuesday.
The next rain-maker might bring a shower or isolated storm Tuesday, otherwise a mostly dry week is expected next week through next Friday night.
