It looks like we are going to have our first rain-free weekend since May 10 and 11. I hope you will have some time to enjoy the outdoors before Mother Nature turns on the furnace. Whether you are “beaching it” or “bumming” around the pool tomorrow, the forecast is wonderfully warm, and our skies are filled with sunshine. Please remember to put on and reapply sunscreen throughout the day. The UV Index is a 9 and your skin will begin to burn in 30 minutes without protection.
The weather begins to really warm up on Sunday. Depending on which weather model you are looking at, Sunday could be the first in two or three days where the actual air temperature reaches 100 degrees. On top of that, extremely humid air continues to smother the region.
Here's why too much humidity is a bad thing.
Sweat. While kinda icky to look at, is our body's natural air conditioning unit. Beads of sweat form when you get hot. The surrounding air will then evaporate the sweat of your body therefore cooling it down. Well, when there is too much moisture in the air the process of evaporation doesn't work very efficiently. So, our body produces more sweat to try and cool down. When there is too much moisture in the air (higher dew points/ humidity) our bodies have to work much harder to try and cool down. This puts strain on organs and muscles and is the reason we succumb to heat-related injuries.
Heat, by the way, is the No. 1 weather-related killer. Not hurricanes. Not tornadoes. Not flooding. HEAT! This is why we need to be prepared for what's coming. Check-in on elderly neighbors. If you don't have air conditioning, please go to cooling centers. Remember hot air rises. If you are in a high rise, it will be and feel even hotter. Please be safe.
