Students on Long Island are part of a clinical trial to test COVID-19 transmission.
Twenty university campuses nationwide, including Stony Brook University, are involved in the COVID-19 Prevention Network study.
The study, with the Moderna vaccine, will look to see how effective it is against preventing the spread of the disease to others.
A total of 12,000 students will be enrolled with 400 Stony Brook students enrolled in the study. Students will be monitored throughout.
A process will randomly choose which group participants are in – the immediate vaccination group or a group that will get the vaccine four months later.
The delayed portion of the study is so researchers can tell how well the vaccine works in preventing infection and transmission to others who are vaccinated compared to those who are not yet vaccinated.
