(11/07/06) YONKERS - In a rematch of a historic battle two years ago, Democratic challenger Andrea Stewart-Cousins declared victory over state Senator Nick Spano (R).
Despite being down about 1,100 votes, Spano says his hopes remain alive while the last precincts report and the final votes are tallied. In the 2004 election Spano defeated Stewart-Cousins by just 18 votes in what was the longest recount in New York State history. Spano comes from one of Westchester's strong political families and he has held on to the 35th Senate District seat for 10 terms.
During the campaign, Stewart-Cousins stated a vote for her was a vote for change. If her lead stands, Stewart-Cousins will get the opportunity to influence Albany that she missed out on in 2004.
