No one wants to end up in the emergency room or urgent care, especially on a holiday. But medical professionals say this is a busy time of year for just that.
"We do see around the holidays an increase in people going to urgent care," says Dr. Hadeel Alkhairw with NYU Langone Medical Associates—Tarrytown.
Alkhairw says some of the more common medical issues they see right now are cuts, lacerations and burns. She tells us those injuries typically stem from cooking and preparing food.
She says it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the kitchen tools ahead of time, especially if you don't use them often.
Other medical professionals say they see a lot of sports-related injuries around this time.
"One of the common issues I see with my patients is stomach upset," says Dr. Alkhairw.
Dr. Alkhairw says portion control can help prevent those problems.
She also urges everyone to stay hydrated to avoid health problems.
