A 6-year-old girl was fatally struck by a school bus in Orange County Friday, according to state police.
News 12 is told the incident happened at the corner of Lemberg Court and Acres Road in Kiryas Joel at around 11 a.m.
Multiple community sources tell News 12 the child was getting off the school bus when she fell and was struck by her bus driver. The bus at the scene is owned and operated by Kiryas Joel School District.
The child has been identified as Leah Mezzi.
State police haven't released any other information.
In a statement, Kiryas Joel School District called the incident a "tragic loss of life" and said the driver involved has been taken off-route while authorities investigate.
