Westchester County Executive Andy Spano (D-NY) delivered the State of the County speech Thursday, reflecting on accomplishments of the last year and introducing new initiatives to keep Westchester moving forward. In his tenth annual speech, Spano focused on ways to protect the people of Westchester and the environment. He also spoke about combating childhood obesity, taking care of senior citizens and protecting children from sexual predators. Spano says all measures taken by county government are intended to improve the quality of life. Spano highlighted a new affordable housing initiative in which the non-profit housing land trust would take ownership of any land the county purchases. The trust would then build affordable housing units, which the county would lease to developers on continuous and renewable terms. In this way, the homes would be affordable permanently. The initiative gets high marks from both Republicans and Democrats. Republicans said they were hoping to hear more about taxes and what Westchester can do to reduce the county tax burden. Westchester County Board Minority Leader George Oros (R-NY) insists ?since 2000, the county is collecting $348 more from every man, woman and child than they did before.? Spano ended his State of the County speech by crediting the county's strength to the people working toward a common good, saying, ?our county shows what can happen when people look past their differences and focus on the interests they share.?
