A Westchester shelter was awarded with a grant that will help it continue to provide for the community.

Jan Peek House in Peekskill will receive about $55,000 of a more than $11 million state grant that will be shared among several similar facilities.

State Sen. Pete Harckham says the shelter will make improvements to its facility using the funds.

"What they're going to do is repair the roof, the men's shower, and there's another shower for women they can create,” he says.

Cythia Knox is the CEO of Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill. She says the grant is especially needed since the pandemic has left many people vulnerable.

"We all know the pandemic has been devastating. This grant will make sure that vulnerable people will have their needs met,” she says.

The renovations could begin within the next few months.
