The Rockland County community marked a somber anniversary Wednesday on the one-year anniversary of a fire at a Spring Valley assisted living facility where two people died.
The vigil was held outside of Columbian Engine No. 1 in Spring Valley.
The fire at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults took the lives of a resident and 35-year-old Spring Valley firefighter Jared Lloyd.
Lloyd helped nearly 100 elderly residents out of the assisted living home before a portion of the building collapsed, trapping him inside.
His brothers at the Columbian Engine say supporting the Lloyd family builds strength among the area's fire departments.
Investigators say the fire occurred after a father-and-son team of rabbis used a blowtorch to clean the facility's ovens for Passover.
The pair and two former village building inspectors are facing charges for Lloyd's death.
Jared Lloyd's father, Calvin Lloyd, says he hopes convictions will bring him some peace after an extremely difficult year without his son.
