The balance of power is shifting in a dramatic fashion, with Republicans set to take control of the Senate.
On Friday, 12 new members will be sworn in, as the Democrats prepare to give up their control.
The more tricky part of the political calculus for Republicans this session is that their majority in the lower chamber will be super-tight.
The House GOP will have 219 seats in the new Congress - only one seat more than it needs to keep the majority.
This means they will not only have to reach across the aisle to court Democrats, but also manage in-fighting within their own party - and there is very little room for dissent.
The big question now is whether Mike Johnson can get enough support to secure a second term as House speaker.
This will be the first order of business when the session gavels in on Friday, so News 12 asked our local lawmakers who were in Washington, D.C. to weigh in on what's expected to be yet another contentious House speakership battle.
