A Rockland County woman was killed in a bus crash during a volunteer humanitarian mission in Honduras.
Officials say a bus carrying a group of 25 students from Columbia University and Barnard College took a deadly turn on Wednesday. According to investigators, the bus was taking the group to the airport to fly back to the United States when it suddenly veered off the road and fell at least 260 feet into a ravine.
Abigail Flanagan, of Sparkill, was killed in the crash. The 45-year-old woman was a nurse practitioner at the Columbia University Medical Center and also a Columbia student. Columbia sophomore Olivia Erhardt, 18, and 17-year-old Barnard College junior Daniella Moffson were also killed.
Flanagan's son Patrick, who attends Columbia, was also in the bus. He reportedly escaped with bruises.
Flanagan's husband Dennis is en route to Honduras to retrieve her body and bring Patrick back home.
Investigators say the cause of the crash looks to be mechanical failure.
Funeral arrangements for Flanagan have not yet been announced.
