A community in Somers says their homeowner's association won't fix a massive sinkhole, despite many calls about it.
Nick Mastroianni has lived in the Greenbriar private community in Somers for 33 years.
"I raised my kids back here, playing ball. You know, for many years we had a lot of fun back here," he said. "I wouldn't be able to do that now with my grandson."
A massive sinkhole is behind his backyard - and it's been there for a long time.
"Ten years ago, we saw a sinkhole was developing so we notified the homeowners association. They told me there's no imminent danger here, and I said 'Well, let your grandchildren come play back here,"' he says.
He says he's reached out to the homeowners association about 30 times over the years about this.
"Anytime they've come up with an issue for our house, a dent in our gutter or whatever, we correct it right away. So, if we're doing our part, how about they do theirs," he says.
The HOA did put 10 hedges on the perimeter of the hole.
"But all you're doing is masking the problem. As you can see the sinkhole just drops down and there's water that congregates that is deep enough where someone could seriously get injured," he says.
The sinkhole backs into his neighbor's backyard as well.
"We certainly have no problem to pay the due," said his neighbor David Wong. "But in return we still expect this to be safe, even in a public space"
The neighbors tell News12 they don't know what they'll do if the HOA doesn't help them.
