Relatives of victims of a 2001 American Airlines flight that crashed in Queens attended a memorial service in the Bronx Sunday.
The somber service marked the lives of the 265 people killed when Flight 587 wrecked in Belle Harbor, Queens. Confessora Calaf, of Yonkers, and Dario Hildago, of Sleepy Hollow, were among the victims on the Dominican Republic-bound plane that left John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Although authorities immediately identified the victims following the crash, the medical examiner was left with 889 bone fragments and remains. They will now be placed in crypts purchased by New York City. Mourners say the ceremony and burial will allow for closure.
"It's going to make me feel much better. We've been working to put the remains ... in a good place," one mourner said.
